The Dominican Republic Node of the Virtual Campus for Public Health launches the online course on tutor training for network learning

Panama, 20 July 2023 (PAHO)- The Dominican Republic node of the Virtual Campus for Public Health of the Pan American Health Organization (VCPH/PAHO) launched the second edition of the virtual course "Training of tutors for network learning" with more than 35 participants. The course is expected to last for ten weeks, from July 16 to September 24, 2023, and offers an overview of the different tasks and functions related to the management of online training programs.

This initiative seeks to train health professionals from the perspective of Permanent Health Education, providing participants with tools to develop virtual teaching skills within the framework of the Virtual Campus, specifically from the role of tutors. Likewise, it offers a structured approach to the design, editing, assembly, and evaluation of Moodle classrooms within the Virtual Campus.

The educational initiative constitutes a model of collaborative work between nodes that includes the coordination and support of tutors from the Nicaragua Node and the participation of medical specialists, university professors and personnel from the ministries of health of El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

It is expected that, at the end of the course, the participants will develop skills related to the different elements of pedagogical mediation and permanent health education that will provide them with scientific, technological, and methodological tools to create learning opportunities, motivate, support, and provide feedback during the educational process of their students.

The course has four learning units and one closing unit:

  1. Introduction to virtual education and virtual learning environments.
  2. The role of the tutor in teaching-learning in virtual environments.
  3. MOODLE platform tools for teaching-learning.
  4. Evaluation of learning in virtual educational proposals.
  5. Closing and integration.

The end-of-course project will have two products: the pedagogical design of a virtual course (product 1), and the virtual classroom setting of the designed course (Product 2). These products will be carried out in parallel to the development of the learning units, with a specific schedule for each product to be delivered.

The Virtual Campus is PAHO's educational platform and one of the main technical cooperation tools for online learning in the Region of the Americas.
